The 22-year-old defeated the fifth seed with ease, establishing an all-French third-round matchup with Oceane Dodin, the winner of Martina Trevisan of Italy.
“I’m still in shock,” declared Burel, who had never advanced past the second round of a Grand Slam tournament. “I’m just relieved to be done with it.
I’m glad I’m playing Oceane because it means one of us will advance to the fourth round. It will be a fantastic match, I’m sure.
Jessica Pegula took home two titles last season: one in Seoul and one in Montreal from the WTA 1000 trophy.
After being forced to five sets in an intense third-round match, three-time Grand Slam champion Casper Ruud acknowledged on Thursday that he was fortunate to be in the Australian Open at all.
Australian Max Purcell, the 11th seed, was propelled to the brink by the enthusiastic home crowd. Prior to this, Purcell had never advanced past the second round of a major.
After nearly four hours of intense tennis, Ruud—the top-ranked Norwegian in history—finally defeated him 6-3, 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (10/7) to secure his place in the US Open final in 2022.
“It was a fantastic match and it could have gone either way,” the 11th seed remarked.
“Max has improved his tennis to a new level, and I hope the upcoming year brings him even more success.
He is one of the most unconventional players these days and plays quickly, which makes it difficult. Though he made things difficult, things worked out well for me in the end.”
The 45-year-old Australian is one of the few players left who still plays serve-and-volley, and he relentlessly attacked the net to position himself to pull off a stunning upset.
Ruud eventually held on to set up a difficult match against British 19th seed Cameron Norrie, who overcame Italian qualifier Giulio Zeppieri by winning two sets to one.
