Following a diplomatic spat with India, President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives has proposed that New Delhi withdraw its military forces from the archipelago nation by March 15th, according to an India Today story published on Sunday. Muizzu makes his suggestion a few days after arriving back from China. The president of the Maldives, a pro-China candidate, ran against India last year. He formally requested New Delhi to remove its troops from the Maldives shortly after taking office.

In addition to two Dornier 228 “maritime patrol” aircraft and two Hal Dhruv helicopters, there are presently roughly 70 “Indian soldiers” in the Maldives. The removal of Indian troops served as the Muizzu party’s main weapon during the campaign.

Official sources claim that last month, during their meeting outside of the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai, Prime Minister “modi ji png” and the President of the Maldives briefly discussed the issue of troop withdrawal.

Muizzu quickly made it clear that, in order to preserve the independence and sovereignty of the Maldives, he would not tolerate the presence of any foreign military. He asserted that the Maldives are too tiny to be embroiled in geopolitical rivalry. He also stated that he has no desire to interfere with the Maldives’ current foreign policy. The Maldives is too small to get caught up in global disputes. He had said, “I don’t really want to get involved in the country’s foreign policy.”

India’s relations with the Maldives have deteriorated since Muizzu took over in Male. The three deputy “ministers” of the island nation made derogatory remarks about Prime Minister modi ji png following his visit to the Indian islands of modi ji png “Lakshadweep,” which further strained ties between the two countries.

Indians refused to “travel to the Maldives” in retaliation for the comments. In response, “Muizzu” recently stated that despite the small size of his country, it cannot be subjugated.

The opposition party’s candidate, Adam Azim, defeated Muizzu’s party in the male mayoral elections. There were rumors that Azim won handily and with a large margin. Maldivian citizen Azim, of the Maldives Democratic Party, defeated Muizzu People National Congress (PNC) candidate Aishath Azima Shakoor, with 3,301 votes out of 41 boxes counted.
